Summer is literally right around the corner and now is the time to start planning for your child’s summer adventures.  If they are a little older and may be ready to break out on their own, here are a few suggestions for some great sleepaway camps that are driveable from the Orlando area.

Here are 10 sleepaway camps that you can drive to from Orlando.

Camp Crystal Lake

Camp Crystal Lake is located in Alachua County, about two hours north of Orlando.  Summer camp starts in June and run through the end of July.  The fees and rates are based on children that are Alachua County residents with fees being higher for out-of-county campers.  Children in second through ninth grade are best suited for this camp where they will learn to leave their “cool at the gate” and have a place to feel free to be themselves.

Camp Frontier

Camp Frontier is sleepaway camp at its finest!  Located in Haines City, the camp has been around since 1999 and just keeps getting better.  Best recommended for kiddos seven through seventeen, you can sign kiddo up for a two or three week program where they will enjoy all kinds of camp activities including a talent show, campfires, and even a trip to a local theme park!

Camp Guaikinima

Camp Guaikinima, in Fruitland Park, is about an hour northwest of Orlando, and may have some of the best forests for hiking.  If you have kiddos ages six to sixteen, they will enjoy staying in one of the numerous air conditioned cabins for one to three weeks while getting to meet new friends, and unforgettable summer adventures.  How about this?  Your kiddo will learn new language skills or get a refresher course in Spanish as all interactions and activities are done in Spanish!

Camp Ithiel

Camp Ithiel is a faith based camp located in Gotha, about fifteen minutes west of Orlando.  This camp offers kiddos ages six to sixteen some real fun, outdoor adventure.  In addition to all the typical fun your child will have at camp, Camp Ithiel inspires campers through fun activities that reinforce life lessons.

Camp Kasem

There are more than one hundred Camp Kesem locations throughout the country, and six right here in Florida.  Camp Kesem is a week long sleepaway camp for children whose lives have been impacted by parents with cancer.  Th camp focuses on creating fun experiences for children six to eighteen years old with typical camp activities like swimming, campfires, songs, food, fun, and more!  The closest one to the Orlando area is at the University of Florida in Gainesville, almost two hours north of the city.

CheerSurge Cheerleading Summer Camp

If your kiddo is always kicking and tumbling, this may the camp for them.   CheerSurge Cheerleading Summer Camp will run from July 10 to July 15.  It is best suited for elementary to highschoolers ages 8 to 17 years old.  The camp will be held at the Lake Buena Vista Resort in Orlando.

Earth Immersion Scuba Summer Camp

If you are looking for something different for your teenager to do this summer, well look no further!  Earth Immersion Scuba Summer Camp is where your child will learn how to scuba dive, earn certifications, and all while having a great time. About two hours northwest of Orlando, this scuba diving is located in Archer, Florida near some of Florida’s gorgeous crystal clear springs.  It is a co-ed camp that has seven day or thirteen day programs which are best suited for children ages thirteen to eighteen years old.

Everglades Youth Conservation Center

The Everglades Youth Conservation Center has sleepaway camps for third through eight graders that will inspire children to want to help preserve Florida’s natural wildlife and their habitats.  It is located in West Palm Beach, about two and a half hours outside of Orlando.  Your child can attend up to three weeks of camp (not consecutive weeks) and enjoy all kinds of outdoor sports like swimming, fishing, paddle sports, and archery.

Pine Tree Camp

Pine Tree Camp offers a three week sleepaway camp program for children ages six through thirteen.  Children attend camp Monday through Friday and go home on the weekends.  It is in Boca Raton at Lynn University and prides itself on teaching children independence and how to rise to new challenges, all while having fun doing the usual camp activities and great outdoor fun.

Wekiva Youth Camp

For the nature lover in your family, the Wekiva Youth Camp in Apopka offers first through eighth graders a fun, interactive learning experience.  Throughout their week long stay, campers will enjoy crafts, sports, doing a nature study, swimming in the pools or at the springs, as well as fun evening programs like campfires and making s’mores too.  Register soon; the summer program begins June 19 through July 30 and spaces tend to fill quickly.
