Longwood is a great place to take the kids. There are a lot of great parks to take them to play, the downtown area is on the National Register of Historic Places and not to mention Wekiva River is in Longwood. Add in the fact that there is a place where you can get chocotacos and you have a recipe for a fantastic day out with the kids!

Things to do in Longwood with Kids

Big Tree Park

Big Tree Park is known for its ancient trees.  It is located in the Spring Hammock Preserve and also serves as a trailhead for the Cross Seminole Trail.  Enjoy a small hike if you like, through the park along the boardwalk and learn about the trees you encounter thanks to signage posted throughout the area.  A memorial has been set there for “The Senator” a 3,500 year old National Champion Bald Cypress that was lost to a fire in 2012.  “Lady Liberty” still stands and is over 1,000 years old. Hikers, cyclists, and families alike stop at Big Tree Park to enjoy a rest stop, restrooms, their picnic areas, and the playground.

Candyland Park

Candyland Park is a great park with tons of options for outdoor fun.  Check out the playground, 3 tennis courts, 2 basketball courts, futsal court, and skate park!  You’ll find baseball and softball fields as well as a T-ball field, perfect for practicing with your kiddo. There is also a pavilion and picnic area where you can enjoy a snack or picnic lunch.

City of Longwood Farmers Market

Longwood Farmers Market is held in Longwood’s beautiful historic district.  It is open every Sunday from 9am to 2pm.  The farmers market hosts vendors with fresh produce, seafood, baked goods, succulents, plants, and local honey as well as artisans and crafters.

Historic District of Longwood 

Longwood’s Historic District was entered into the National Register of Historical Places in October of 1990. Learn about the oldest city in Seminole county on The Historic District of Longwood’s walking tour. It will take about an hour to complete and will lead you from one end of the district to the other, walking you through the history of the Heart of Longwood, as well as shops and boutiques. 

Stop by City Hall to grab your brochure to get started.  

Longwood’s annual Christmas Parade also takes place in the historic district.  See everything from animal performers, to firetrucks and police cars, local businesses, girl scouts and boy scouts, churches, banks, monster trucks, Lyman High school marching band and ROTC, and so much more. 

Longwood’s Sunrail is located in the historic district as well.  Take a quick train ride to Winter Park, Orlando, or up to Lake Mary or Sanford. 

You could also stop by Wild Hare Market for takeout or shop their fresh produce, local honey, gluten free selection, canned goods, raw milk, and more

Reiter Park

Reiter Park celebrated a grand opening on September 15th 2018 after undergoing extensive renovations on their 6 acre property.  The park has 5 pavilions, an amphitheater, 2 tennis courts, a full basketball court, workout equipment, fishing pier, playground, walking path, and splash pad. 

Along with Longwood’s Farmers Market, Reiter Park also hosts Downtown Longwood Food Trucks every second Thursday of the month.  Take advantage of the vast grassy area to lay out a blanket and enjoy good food and live music.

Victorio’s Oyster Bar and Grille

Victorio’s Oyster Bar and Grille on Dog Track Road in Longwood is a very well kept secret.  This family owned business has delicious food and friendly service.  The kids will enjoy playing the arcade games and will love the huge fish tank located down the center of the restaurant.  Victorio’s has a vast menu and something for everyone. You can also enjoy live music on their patio Friday nights from 7-11pm.

Wako Taco

Wako Taco is a locally owned restaurant with a fun menu.  Check out the Chocotacos and Fried Ice Cream Tacos for a sweet dessert. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu and the kids will love the ambiance.  Also, be on the lookout for their food truck popping up around town.  Parents can go next door to Hourglass Brewery, also locally owned, for an array of selections brewed onsite.

Wekiva Golf Club

Wekiva Golf Club is a well kept secret located in the middle of a residential area.  Take a day to enjoy the beauty of this golf course utilizing their “Member for a day”.  This beautifully kept semi-private club is one of the most established courses of Central Florida.  PGA Jr  Golf Camp, Little Linksters, is available during the summer as well as Fall/Winter. The Wekiva Grill is open for lunch or a snack daily, stop in after your round of golf, or make a takeout order if you’re in the area.

Wekiva Island

Wekiva Island is located along the Wekiva River. Finding your kind of outdoor fun is easy at Wekiva Island.  If you’d rather spend the day in the water, you can rent a cabana and swim in the river. Or if you want to be a little adventurous, rent a canoe, paddleboard, or kayak and explore the beauty of the river.  Have lunch at their on site food truck, Without a Paddle Cafe. Wekiva hosts events such as paint night, beer tastings, and live music.  Winter is an especially fun time! Enjoy Winter Wonderland as they Deck the Island. You can snow tube, meet the Grinch and a few members of Whoville, enjoy weekly movies and popcorn by the river while drinking hot cocoa. There is Pancakes with Santa and Mrs. Claus and so much more.

West Branch Library

West Branch Library offers a nice cool indoor reading spot for you and the kids.

The children’s section of the library has a table to bring and share those reading treasures, computers with headphones, as well as a small toy box with cardboard brick block sets to expand the imagination. Join in on Chess club, lego club, storytimes, book clubs, and more.
